Avian Flu Myths and Mysticisms – How can the Public Protect themselves?

The lethal strain of H5N1 Avian Flu has arrived but the myths still persist. How do we know what’s a myth, and what’s a fact when it comes to Avian Flu - and how can members of the public protect themselves?

Brian O’Connell MD of infection control specialists Adveticus Ltd states,” It is essential that the myths and mysticisms around H5N1 are dispelled, thus empowering the general public to prepare safely for the expected Flu Pandemic”.

Although still deemed an avian disease, when - as is expected - H5N1 goes on to become a human pandemic strain, it is essential that the Public have been able to take precautions free from myths and mysticisms.

• Myth: H5N1 is only a bird disease: Fact: CA Nidom (Head of the Avian Influenza Laboratorium at the University of Airlangga, Indonesia) claims that tests carried out show that 1/5th of stray cats in Indonesia carry H5N1.


• Myth: Tamiflu will protect us. Fact: the World Health Organisation has stated that there are indications in Egypt of increased resistance to Tamiflu.


• Myth: Masks will not offer protection. Fact: A surgical mask will not offer the protection needed; FFP2 & FFP3 respirators will provide an uncertain level of protection. But CE approved respirator Triosyn T- 3000 & T5000V respirators trap and kill more than 99.99% of viruses attempting to pass through the mask.
